About

Nelsonia is the solo project of Becky Nelson, a Portland-based digital designer, illustrator, and animator. Becky specializes in educational, editorial, and branding/marketing projects for small, creative businesses. She is passionate about making good ideas better through collaboration and imagination.

Becky began her career as a comedy video director, working at The Second City in Chicago and later at Boom Chicago in Amsterdam. She co-wrote, directed and edited episodes of the weekly Dutch news satire Comedy Central News for Comedy Central Holland. Her years in the improv trenches are apparent both in Becky's quirky aesthetic and in her approach to creative collaboration: always accepting the premise and finding ways to heighten it in order to best serve the story.

In 2009 Becky shifted her focus to digital design and animation. She volunteered at the incomparable public radio station KCRW, creating motion graphics to support their fundraising efforts. She worked as an interactive designer at digital marketing firm Fatfree Studio in Manhattan, leading the design on several global product launches for Roche. Armed with a healthy technical toolkit and experience working with companies both large and small, Becky went into business for herself in 2013.

Current and past clients include an award-winning business storytelling training company, published authors, teachers, actors, a dance school, and a family financial guru. As a side project Becky self-publishes magazines for kids: The Mini Monthly for early elementary ages, and Teeny Zeeny for toddlers. Her biggest, best project of all is being a mom to her 6-year-old daughter, Eva.

Becky holds a B.S. in Radio/Television/Film from Northwestern University, and a graphic design certificate from Santa Monica College. Her favorite projects draw on her many technical capabilities while providing opportunities for creative problem solving. She strives to approach her work—and life!—with kindness, optimism, and curiosity.
